This picture says so much about both baseball and photography. The instantaneous nature of the exposure catches the ball in mid-flight, and holds it there forever. Just like baseball itself, a timeless ritual. The ball defines the basis for the relationship between the boys, the photographer, as a shadow, and we, the viewers. We all, as participants, are riveted on the ball and though it went up, somehow we know it will never come down.
